| Holiday insurance
Holiday insurance is there to offer
protection and cover in the event of anything going wrong
whilst on holiday. Luckily for us, today's travel is a lot
safer than it was in Christopher Columbus’s day. Nevertheless
there are still plenty things that can and often do go wrong
which is why it is advisable to take out holiday insurance.
Before beginning the search for
holiday insurance its worth considering that you may already
have some cover with your current insurance policies. For
instance your motor insurance may already covers you for driving
whilst on holiday. And your house insurance policy may well
cover some of your possessions when you take them outside
the home and on holiday with you.
The cost of your holiday insurance policy is
calculated by looking at the geographical area you travel
to, the activities you plan to undertake, the time period
you travel for and the amount of cover you require. But as
a general rule, the lower the amount of cover offered the
cheaper the policy. So when comparing prices make sure you
are happy with the level of cover offered. The cheapest policy
may not be the best. Check what cover is on offer for the
below categories.
- Personal belongings
- Cash
- Medical expenses
- Personal accident
- Cancellations and curtailment
- Delays
- Legal expenses
Its also a good idea to look at what activities
the policy covers you for. Its always better to be honest
and tell the insurer what activities you are planning to undertake.
If you are planning on skiing or taking an adventure holiday
then the policy will be more expensive but at least you'll
be covered in the event of an accident. If you are planning
on driving on holiday it will also be worth checking if you
are insured to drive hire cars or your own car and if so what
level of cover they offer. If you are on the wrong side of
the road in a foreign country then third party insurance might
not be adequate enough cover.
The following levels of cover could be used as
relatively safe amount of cover for each area, but this is
only a typical level of cover and not suitable for everyone.
| medical expenses |
£2,000,000 |
| personal liability |
£1,000,000 |
| cancellation |
£3,000 |
| baggage |
£1,500 |
| cash |
£250 |
And it’s worth noting
that the only way to realistic find the cheapest and best
quote is to shop around. Many companies claim to be the cheapest
with the best cover & service but they can’t all
be so make sure you get several quotes. We hope you find the
holiday insurance company directory useful whilst hunting
for quotes.
